Axle Differential Service & Repair Computer & Electronic Diagnostics Transmission Service Transmission fluid acts as a lubricant for all the moving parts in your transmission. Automatic transmission fluid also acts as a coolant and helps transmit power from the engine to the transmission. If your vehicle has a manual transmission, or stick shift, your manufacturer recommends changing the fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles. The service interval for an automatic transmission is every 30,000-50,000 miles; although it’s not a bad idea to have it checked more frequently. Please refer to your owner’s manual for factory recommended maintenance intervals for your specific vehicle. That’s because if there’s a leak and your transmission fluid levels drop, you may not know about it until it’s too late. Chances are you won’t hear any noise or get any other identifiable clues. Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) services are often neglected and even when performed, are often incomplete. This can lead to automatic transmission shifting problems and premature repairs or replacement. 90% of automatic transmission failures are due to overheating and fluid contamination. A typical transmission drain and refill service replaces only 40% of the old contaminated ATF. The remainder is trapped inside valve bodies, the torque converter and transmission cooler lines. New ATF from a conventional drain and refill service can often loosen damaging sludge and varnish deposits leading to shift problems and even transmission failure. Automatic transmission replacement can cost $2,000 or more. Drive Train The driveline is what turns your axles, and your axle is what turns your wheels. There are different types of drivelines depending on whether your vehicle has rear wheel drive, front wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The driveline connects to the transmission and differential through a series of universal joints. Most universal and CV joints are sealed and don’t require periodic lubrication. However, it’s extremely important to have them inspected every time your vehicle is up on a lift. Any crack or leak in the joint’s protective housing, or boot, can result in severe damage to your vehicle.Needless to say, your Lorentz Technician will inspect universal and CV joint boots every time you bring your car in Complete Car Maintenance: Drive Train, CV Shafts & Boots The constant velocity (CV) shaft, boot and joints are used on front wheel-drive and many four wheel-drive vehicles. Maintenance and Care CV boots should be inspected with every oil change and are inspected as part of Lorentz First Choice Automotive Total Car Care . CV boots can be torn or cracked over time, allowing dirt into the joint. Unless discovered quickly, both the boot and joint will need replacement. In this case, a replacement axle may be the best option. Signs of a bad CV joint include a clicking noise while turning, or a shudder or clunk. Go to the experts at Lorentz if you are experiencing any of these problems, before the problem gets worse. Complete Car Maintenance: Drive Train, Transfer Case The transfer case is attached to the transmission and connects to both the front and rear axles on a four- wheel drive vehicle. Maintenance and Care The transfer case should be checked at every oil change for adequate lubrication. Many transfer cases require periodic changes of oil or fluid- service is available at Lorentz Automotive . Please refer to your owner’s manual for factory recommended maintenance intervals for your specific vehicle. Transfer case problems include complete loss of four-wheel drive operation and the inability to switch between modes. Lorentz technicians are experts in the service and repair of transfer cases and four wheel drive vehicles. Complete Car Maintenance: Drive Train, Differentials & Axles An axle connects the two wheels on opposite sides of the vehicle. The differential is gears and bearings either inside the transmission or the housing of the axle. Maintenance and Care The differential lube level should be checked with every oil change. Some differentials require periodic cleaning and repacking of wheel bearings. If you drive an SUV or light truck, and especially if you pull a boat (meaning these components may get submerged in
